This allows the technician to set up the OTDR, test, and evaluate the 1 km link. The two fiber reels provide sufficient fiber for fusion splicing exercises. Connectors at the ends of the fiber reels allow for convenient connections for loss testing, enabling the student technician to measure and validate fusion splice loss.

It is built with the components a technician needs to learn how to:

- Cut and splice fiber optic cables with a fusion splicer
- Inspect and clean connectors with a video inspection probe and typical cleaning supplies
- Locate fiber faults with a visual fault locator
- Measure fiber optic loss using optical power meters and light sources
- Use an OTDR to measure length and loss using Auto or Expert modes
- Each Fiber Trainer requires a Consumables Kit (SPC01) which provides the cables, cleaning supplies and supplementary items needed to perform the experiments during the practical part of the learning modules.
