This operation will allow FCI to leverage MergeOptics' leading position in AOCs to complement active and passive copper cable assemblies to address market data and communications applications.
Data centers and high-performance computing applications demand that the data transmission rate per channel, as defined by various standards, must be maintained over long cable lengths. Current applications utilize high-speed copper I/O for short to moderate cable length solutions. Applications requiring longer cable lengths employ fiber optics, either through active optical cables or by using transceivers.
Market demand for higher speeds and port density continues to drive vendors toward faster solutions, increasingly utilizing active optical cables and transceivers as the market units for high-speed I/O solutions of 25 GB/s per channel. “MergeOptics, with its leading position in fiber optic cables, expands FCI’s high-speed I/O portfolio of passive and active copper solutions,” said Pete Curwen, corporate vice president and general manager of FCI’s Electronics Division.
