As part of this expansion, the companies are collaborating on a series of new initiatives aimed at driving innovation for the world's increasingly virtualized networks. Among the most innovative projects are research and development focused on the evolution of wireless access networks toward 5G and the convergence of wired and wireless technologies. Specifically, the companies will collaborate to create an industry-leading universal access device that can be flexibly used for any combination of wired and wireless connections.

Collaborative Innovation for the 5G Era:
This collaboration will combine Freescale's deep silicon expertise for advanced networks and software with Bell Labs' systems knowledge to define and establish a converged solution. The expected result is a highly configurable access technology that supports both wired and wireless 5G processes in a single architecture to accelerate and simplify next-generation network deployments for service providers, while dramatically reducing CAPEX and OPEX. The two companies plan to unveil a proof of concept for their new universal remote node at the end of the research project in the first quarter of 2017.
