According to GeekWire, Alpental Technologies was working on 5G-related projects. 5G is a wireless network technology that will succeed 4G/LTE, which other nations are also striving to develop and introduce to the global market. While it's unclear how close Alpental is to launching the technology, Japan and other countries have been working towards a 5G rollout by 2020. 5G mobile networks have immense capabilities with data transmission speeds of up to ten gigabits per second.

GeekWire suggests this new acquisition could be a ploy to bring Google Fiber to more homes. Currently, Google offers its Google Fiber internet and television service to a limited number of people in the United States. Fiber offers gigabit traffic and download speeds, a significant advantage over local cable and DSL providers.
