The multinational consulting and technology firm will work alongside 26 other companies, including Telefónica, BT, Red Hat, Canonical, and Brocade.
NFV (Network Functions Virtualization) technology involves bringing cloud techniques to the core of telecommunications operators' networks, so that the infrastructure they use doesn't require specialized hardware. Furthermore, cabling, equipment installation, and interconnection processes are simplified by performing them as software configurations rather than physical actions.
NFV reduces dependence on hardware devices, increasing network scalability and customization, making it easier to improve. By eliminating hardware, both the space it occupies and its energy consumption are reduced, as well as lowering network maintenance costs.
It is also proving to be a revolution for telecommunications operators, although currently available products are immature and incompatible with each other due to a lack of standards. The Open Source MANO (OSM) group within ETSI aims to create a reference implementation of the NFV management layer, thereby accelerating the definition of detailed specifications and, consequently, the adoption of this technology in the industry.
Indra participates in this group, contributing its vision and experience in telecommunications network management processes, as well as executing proof-of-concept integrations of products from various partners—both network function providers and management systems—within the OSM ecosystem.
One of these initial proof-of-concept projects is being presented at TMForum Live!, taking place from Monday, May 9th, to Thursday, May 12th, in Nice. The Catalyst project, "NFV Service Orchestration and Resource Management based on Open Source MANO," led by Indra, demonstrates how the initial version of OSM has been integrated with participants' products to create, on a cloud-like infrastructure, an enterprise virtual network capable of providing connectivity and Voice over IP services. In addition, conventional physical infrastructure is included to explore a real-world use case where both worlds coexist.
