The deployed network consists of two independent, next-generation (standalone) 5G cores, equipped with advanced capabilities such as Network Exposure Function (NEF) and roaming capabilities, enabling continuous and uninterrupted connectivity.
The CTTC will test key use cases such as critical communications, autonomous driving, and immersive experiences using virtual, augmented, and extended reality (VR/AR/XR). Furthermore, this private 5G network will serve as a foundation for future developments linked to 6G technologies, allowing for the seamless integration of devices such as smart glasses, sensors, cameras, and XR headsets.
The project is funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation and the European Union's NextGenerationEU initiative, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, through the UNICO Plaza6G project. The initiative aims to strengthen telecommunications research and provide companies with an advanced, programmable network that facilitates standards validation, testing of new use cases, and knowledge generation.
Mikko Uusitalo, CEO of Boldyn Networks in Europe, stated, “We are very proud to collaborate with the CTTC on this innovative project. Our aim is to demonstrate the transformative potential of private 5G networks in key sectors of the economy. By utilizing available spectrum for self-management, we are facilitating access for industrial companies to advanced infrastructure that will enable them to accelerate their digitalization. This deployment will be an open platform for innovation.”
Josep Mangues, Director of Research and Head of the Services as Networks (SaS) unit at the CTTC, added, “Having a programmable private 5G network represents a significant advancement for our research capabilities. This infrastructure will be integrated into our experimental facilities and will allow both our teams and our technology partners to explore new applications and take telecommunications technology a step further. The collaboration with Boldyn opens up new opportunities for us to continue driving digitalization across multiple sectors.”
