Tuesday 's sessions were related to Profibus.

ASEA BROWN BOVERI – Golden Rules for Success with Profibus
The success of a Profibus project requires adherence to meticulous rules. Along with a shift in mindset regarding engineering approach, the selection of instruments, accessories, engineering tools, etc., plays a crucial role.
The objective of this presentation was to review those points that, due to their importance, should not be overlooked.

LOGITEK – Troubleshooting and Recovery in Profibus Networks
. Despite their robustness, Profibus networks can experience occasional problems that are not always easy to diagnose, as the user lacks a clear view of the issue.
The "Profibus Troubleshooting" presentation provided a practical demonstration of how to inspect a Profibus DP network to diagnose and resolve the most common problems that can occur in installations incorporating this fieldbus. The presentation
also introduced the specific tools required for in-depth analysis and provided an overview of the methodology.

SMC – Motion Control Technologies.
The various serial communication technologies available today offer clear improvements, from simplifying electrical design and the resulting cost savings, to improving diagnostics and maintenance, controlling the position of an electric actuator, and even remotely controlling a machine.
These advantages open up a wide range of applications across different automation market segments, from controlling automotive welding clamps to controlling and monitoring process elements or leak detection, as well as fully controlled electric motion systems.

Endress+Hauser – Profibus PA – Benefits of PA Profile 3.02
This presentation covered PROFIBUS PA and the benefits of PA Profile 3.02. PROFIBUS PA (Process Automation) is used to monitor measuring equipment through control systems in process automation. It is designed for use in explosive/hazardous areas (Ex-zone 0 and 1).
Profibus PA uses the same protocol as DP, and the latter, which supports much higher speeds, is used as the transmission medium for process signals to the controller. This means that DP and PA can work very well together, especially in hybrid applications where Process and Factory Automation networks operate together.
Typical integrations in PLCs were also shown using GSD files (cyclic communication), in acyclic systems via DTM/EDD, and the functionalities of the PROFIBUS PA Profile, with special emphasis on detailing the benefits for the end user:
- unified equipment diagnosis according to the NAMUR NE107 recommendation,
- simplicity in equipment replacement and faster uploading and downloading of parameters during commissioning.

Phoenix Contact SAU - Long-Distance PB and PN Communications.
It is often necessary to manage signals distributed across a large geographical area.
Several options exist for this, generally involving dedicated infrastructure at a relatively high cost.
Now, a new technology is being introduced that allows any existing cable to be used to transmit Profibus or Profinet communication over distances exceeding 10 km via just two wires.
The aim is to reduce costs by utilizing readily available components while simultaneously working with fully standard fieldbuses.

Endress+Hauser – Profibus Instrumentation Network Engineering.
This presentation covered PROFIBUS PA and, more generally, the benefits of using digital technology in the world of Process Automation.
Compared to analog communications, using a fieldbus offers a wide range of advantages, such as noise immunity, fault detection techniques, flexibility, and much more.
The benefits were presented at different phases of a network integration project: design, implementation, operation, and maintenance.
This translates into simplified architectures, reduced wiring, improved safety, and increased project cost-effectiveness.
The NAMUR NE107 recommendation was presented, along with how end users can benefit from it. The explanation was based on practical scenarios and typical images of an HMI monitoring system.

Wednesday 's sessions were related to Profinet.

Siemens - Energy Management with PROFINET IO in Electrical Distribution and Water Treatment Systems.
Thanks to the solution of network analyzers installed directly on the decentralized peripheral stations in PROFINET, the customer can obtain all network values and energy consumption data via the same fieldbus used for industrial communications. This
also provides complete transparency of all energy consumption for each installation or substation under monitoring, both locally on the HMI screen located in the cabinet and in the central SCADA system via open communication using OPC Server.
The upper PROFINET controller has access to all energy information and can act accordingly, signaling any type of warning or alarm.
The customer obtains significant cost benefits, as the space required in the cabinet is considerably reduced, a display on the cabinet door for each electrical circuit is not necessary, and programming and commissioning time is reduced thanks to pre-configured library blocks and HMI screens.

Lapp Group – PROFINET Cabling Infrastructure
The choice of transmission medium is a critical factor in ensuring the proper functioning of the PROFINET network.
Key elements to consider were discussed:
• Suitable copper and fiber transmission systems
• Applications with high transmission rates of up to 10 Gbit/s (e.g., image and video)
• Fundamental aspects to consider depending on the type of application

HARTING - PROFINET End-to-End Link (E2E) – Installation and Testing.
From its inception, PROFINET has been committed to using state-of-the-art technology from the IT industry for data cable connections, adapting them to industrial specifications while maintaining compatibility with the IEEE 802.3 standard.
Until now, two-pair cabling has allowed for reliable transmissions of up to 100 Mbps in industrial environments, thanks to mechanical adaptations of the cabling and connections, initially designed for office installations. All these adaptations have been incorporated into the various standards that define the PROFINET standard.
Now that the use of gigabit Ethernet networks has become established in the IT environment, PROFINET is once again incorporating these advancements and, while maintaining compatibility with the original specification, is implementing 8-pair cabling to enable 1 Gbps transmissions in automation networks.
This presentation showcased the characteristics of this new cabling and the standards that define it.
In addition, a review was made of the recommended techniques for implementing and verifying network cabling in a PROFINET environment.

Siemens – PET Bottle Blowing Machines with PROFINET IRT.
Thanks to PROFINET IRT, customers achieve precise control of machine movements, as well as the pressure and temperature applied to blow PET bottle preforms. This provides complete flexibility in control based on the different characteristics of the containers being manufactured.
The significant reduction in cycle times allows for a considerable increase in production. All of this is achieved with a single network, eliminating the need for multiple communication interfaces.
The use of compact, high-density peripherals also optimizes space in electrical cabinets.
Furthermore, thanks to new motion control technologies based on drives and servomotors, customers have moved away from older mechanical and hydraulic technologies, saving on maintenance costs and achieving better waste management.

ASEA BROWN BOVERI – How to Optimize Engineering in Industrial Automation.
In this session, we presented a project for palletizing cava bottles at a renowned winery near Barcelona. We showcased a complete PROFINET architecture with PLCs, IP20 and IP66 frequency converters, robots, decentralized I/O with safety modules, and an operator terminal.
The Automation Builder tool is the engineering tool we use for all phases of an automation project:
- PLC configuration and programming, and programming of the safety CPU
- Configuration of the PROFINET/PROFIBUS network and slave devices such as frequency converters and robots
- System diagnostics via online connection, allowing viewing of the PDP and/or PNIO network of connected slaves, drive speeds, bus diagnostics, etc.
This single, comprehensive software tool makes it possible to carry out both small and large-scale projects.

Siemens – Automated Guided Vehicles for Parts Transport with PROFINET.
The application is a control system for five automated guided vehicles (AGVs) from a central station with centralized intelligence.
The complexity of this application lies in the communication between the central station and each vehicle, which is carried out via industrial wireless LAN (IWLAN) using the determinism offered by the PROFINET IO fieldbus.
A SIMATIC S7 controller is used as the PROFINET IO controller at the central station, while each vehicle uses an ET 200S decentralized peripheral station as its PROFINET IO device.
This is achieved using a SCALANCE W788-1 RJ45 access point at the central station and SCALANCE W748-1 RJ45 clients on the vehicles, employing Siemens iPCF technology to ensure determinism in industrial Wi-Fi communication with the various PROFINET IO devices.

Thursday 's sessions were related to more general topics and wiring.

LOGITEK - Profibus and Profinet Installation Certifications: The Guarantee of Quality.
When designing a Profibus or Profinet network, it is essential to adhere to the standards set by the respective regulations. The experience of the engineer performing this work is crucial, but not sufficient.
Upon delivery of a Profibus or Profinet network, the end user must be guaranteed that it meets the highest quality standards in both its design and implementation. This is only possible if the network has been certified by an engineer with the appropriate accreditation: PI Certification.
A certified network ensures the end user a high level of quality and extends the lifespan of the installations, reducing maintenance costs.

Murr Electronik:
In today's industry, the primary requirement of end users of machines and/or installations is cost, which is typically associated with using older technology, i.e., discrete I/O installations without communication capabilities.
The result for the end user, and also for maintenance services, is a high cost in the medium term compared to the advantages offered by fieldbuses such as PROFIBUS and PROFINET.
Costs are reduced not only due to the inherent advantages of eliminating wiring errors, but also because PROFIBUS/PROFINET protocols allow device manufacturers to implement diagnostics at the system, device, and, most importantly for the end user, signal levels.
The ability to quickly identify the location and type of fault allows for a reduction of over 90% in machine downtime.
This generally translates into significantly greater savings than those obtained by simply cutting costs in technology.

Phoenix Contact – Profibus and Profinet Wireless Communications.
In industry, there are numerous applications where communication via a conventional fieldbus is problematic.
This can occur due to the need to cover very long distances, or the presence of moving, rotating, or difficult-to-access parts.
It is in these cases that wireless communication systems offer significant advantages over conventional cabling.
The aim is not to replace cabling, but rather to complement it with robust technologies, such as WLAN or Bluetooth, which provide greater reliability than cables in these applications.

Logitek Competence Center - Profibus or Profinet: Which Technology to Choose for My Next Application?
Many users, when faced with a new application, wonder which fieldbus technology is most suitable.
This presentation compares both technologies and lays the groundwork for making a choice: Speed, structure, or number of nodes.
The presentation also included the technological advancements that Profinet offers over Profibus, which go far beyond simply increasing speed and the number of supported nodes:
- Profienergy for energy savings,
- Profisafe for safety control, and
- Start Up FSU for the quick and easy insertion of nodes into the network.

Murr Electronik - Profibus/Profinet cost savings in electrical installations. Example in hydraulic units.
The fieldbus technology in Profibus/Profinet offers several advantages over traditional wiring, even more so when the application uses IP67 technology. Besides saving on traditional terminals, this also reduces costs in terms of electrical cabinet space or the complete elimination of junction boxes.
The number of connection points (CPs) eliminated has an even greater impact when dealing with applications involving high-consumption components such as solenoid valves in hydraulic units, which are traditionally activated by amplifier relays.
This presentation aimed to demonstrate this reduction through a comparison of CPs and the costs of the eliminated components.

Harting - Latest update of the PNO cabling guide.
Although PROFINET uses the same Ethernet technologies to transmit data as IT networks, the approach used to implement them is different.
Thus, the topology and the different cables and connectors are adapted to the environment.
Communication is still based on the OSI model, but the physical layer implementation is redesigned to allow interaction with field devices and their physical arrangement.
However, the use of a common technology allows a single Ethernet standard to connect field devices with higher-level communication networks.
This presentation showed the different adaptations that the PROFINET standard implements to provide reliable connections in the workplace.

Friday's sessions were related to profisafe and the conclusion of the event.

ASEA BROWN BOVERI – Designing Intelligent Safety with PROFIsafe
We have seen that, naturally, we must protect people, machines, and the environment.
To this end, ABB launched the AC500-S safety range.
This range integrates seamlessly with the existing AC500 platform and allows for the integration of safety signals (digital and analog) both locally and remotely via PROFINET with PROFIsafe communications.
This range is TÜV certified and is also available for operation in extreme conditions such as temperature, altitude, saline environments, and vibrations.
Programming is performed using the same engineering tool based on CoDeSys. To facilitate programming, standard safety libraries are available, with PLCopen-based safety function blocks, and it is also possible to verify that the programming code conforms to standards to facilitate application validation.

MURR - Profisafe / Application in Manufacturing Lines
The use of IP67-rated fieldbuses has become widespread in the automotive industry due to several factors, the main one being the speed with which problems can be identified thanks to the diagnostics provided by devices located near the I/O points.
However, safety signals were not implemented via the bus until the advent of Profisafe safety solutions, and more recently, also in IP67-rated devices.
This presentation aimed to demonstrate how the use of IP67 Profisafe technology can be cost-effective compared to traditional safety wiring.
