In this introductory talk, we'll discuss the most common applications of fiber optic cables, such as those used in backbone networks and data centers, as well as emerging applications supporting smart buildings and PON-LAN networks. We'll review in detail the different fiber types for multimode (OM3/4/5) and single-mode (OS1a/OS2) fibers, as well as the most common connector types, such as SC, LC, and MPO/MTP.

The ability of an optical fiber to support a given application depends largely on the fiber's length and the insertion loss or attenuation of the transmitted signal. In this presentation, we will analyze the requirements for some common transmission speeds, such as Gigabit Ethernet, and for some future applications, such as 400 Gigabit.

The Level I performance test (loss, length, and polarity) is essential to determine if a fiber is installed correctly, and we will explain how to perform this test.
Finally, we will discuss the most common and preventable problem in fiber optics: dirt that can contaminate the connectors. We will explain simple techniques for inspecting and cleaning your fiber connectors so that we can guarantee the performance of your network.
