The Motorman hybrid connector incorporates two high-speed Ethernet interfaces, providing all the advantages of real-time automation control while reducing wiring complexity. The new device also offers space for five power sockets, five signal sockets, and a protective ground contact. The contacts utilize Tyco Electronics' most advanced, reliable, and cost-effective 2.8mm and 1.2mm MCON contact system.
The rectangular Motorman connector is characterized by its very compact design, measuring only 41.5 x 22.3 millimeters. The capsule was developed entirely from scratch and is available in metal or plastic versions. The metal capsule is ideal for harsh industrial environments, while the plastic version is very economical and suitable for less demanding environments. The cable enters at a 100° angle, ensuring a good fit between the cable's bend radius and the capsule's geometry.
A guided lever secures the Motorman connector capsule to the motor's printed circuit board. The lever opens easily from the side of the assembly, while a screwdriver is required to release it from the other side (to prevent accidental opening). Since the contact insert can rotate 180°, the cable can be routed out in two directions. The spacious side access allows for easy mounting of the device. It also greatly simplifies troubleshooting, as all contacts can be easily checked.
The pin housing, designed for mounting on the servo motor's printed circuit board, has been extensively optimized. First, the low-profile solder pins have a very small mass and are adapted for automated reflow soldering at 270°C. Second, the signal and power pins are positioned and grouped on either side of an integrated barrier. Therefore, the signal and power paths do not cross, which means the printed circuit board requires fewer layers.
The innovative cable jacket sealing (offering IP 69K protection) creates two ring-shaped compression lines around the hybrid cable jacket. Cables from 13 to 17 mm in diameter can be mounted with a tool-free, torque-controlled sealing size. A metal clamp acts as a strain relief, ensuring a tensile force between the cable and connector exceeding 150 N. Simultaneously, the clamp band provides virtually 360° shielding contact for the cable.
The Motorman connector is designed for DC voltage levels between 24 VDC and 600 VDC and up to 20 A of current at temperatures up to 80°C. However, an AC power supply of up to 480 VAC can also be used when three or four power contacts are employed. All applicable European standards and UL/CSA guidelines for clearance and creep distances are met.
