The usual way to connect multiple fiber optic cables in a system is to label each cable with an identification tag and pair them, but this method is far from foolproof, and it's very easy to make time-consuming mistakes. Each of the four housings in the OMC Keyed SMA family features a key in a different position, like a clock face with keys at positions 12, 3, 6, and 9. Thanks to the separate keys, it's impossible to connect the wrong fiber optic cable to the wrong connection. Custom connectors and device housings with slot positions for a higher number of channels can also be manufactured upon request.
As an added benefit, the slot eliminates rotational variation in the SMA connector mating, improving performance uniformity and link reliability.
Widely recognized as one of the world's leading manufacturers of fiber optic systems, OMC's connectors and housed fiber optic transmitters and receivers are primarily produced with all-metal designs and used in industrial and other environments, such as mass transit systems, where longevity, reliability, and durability are essential. For other critical applications, such as MRI scanners, life support equipment, electrical grid equipment, and secure, interference-free communications for defense and banking systems, standard fiber optic components cannot meet the required optical performance. OMC's proprietary active alignment technology optimizes each device and is trusted by its global end-customer base, which includes names such as National Grid, CERN, the NHS, and the Ministry of Defence.
