which will provide coverage within the largest halls at the Shanghai World Expo 2010 exhibition, and will also integrate and launch the world's first TD-LTE USB adapter that supports both 2.3GHz and 2.6GHz, helping operators develop their TD-LTE ecosystem.
The World Expo, held from May 1 to October 31, 2010, in Shanghai, will be a key venue for a high-profile, live demonstration of TD-LTE to a large audience over an extended period. This event has garnered significant attention from both domestic and international telecommunications equipment manufacturers, who will leverage Motorola's expertise in OFDM RF (Radio Frequency) technology and the performance of its TD-LTE solution to meet the typical challenges of an indoor environment. Furthermore, it will provide a transfer rate capable of streaming high-definition video applications and optimized indoor coverage, delivering a true mobile broadband experience throughout the expo.
After months of rigorous evaluation, Motorola was selected for its superior TD-LTE performance in areas such as improved spectrum efficiency and higher downlink throughput. During testing, Motorola also demonstrated a peak transfer rate of 112 megabits per second (Mbps), making it the only vendor capable of achieving the theoretical maximum throughput on 20MHz TD-LTE.
“Following the successful drive-through demonstration at the ITU meeting in Geneva, we are delighted to be working closely with CMCC once again to bring the TD-LTE experience to the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, China,” said Dr. Mohammad Akhtar, Vice President and General Manager for the Wireless Networking Division at Motorola Asia Pacific’s Networking and Mobility Business.
“Motorola has demonstrated its long-term commitment to LTE and is making great strides in the commercialization and globalization of TD-LTE. We have benefited from continuous demonstrations of our expertise and have achieved significant breakthroughs; for example, the industry-first demonstration of over-the-air LTE in the 700 MHz spectrum last year, or Motorola’s selection by CMCC, which confirms Motorola’s ongoing efforts to expand the LTE ecosystem and demonstrates, once again, the maturity of our TD-LTE solution.”.
At World Expo 2010, Motorola will deploy an LTE network to provide indoor coverage in all the halls selected by CMCC. Motorola's LTE network will act as the primary source of broadband connectivity at these locations, in addition to providing backbone networks for other vendors' TD-LTE deployments.
Motorola will provide an end-to-end TD-LTE solution that includes its award-winning evolved packet core (EPC including MME and GW), radio access network (RAN), user equipment (UE), and will leverage its real-world experience with Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) networks with professional services to deploy, maintain, and optimize these cutting-edge networks.
Following the live, drive-through TD-LTE demonstration at ITU Telecom World, where Motorola achieved speeds of up to 81 Mbps in a real-world environment, this announcement reaffirms the company's commitment to delivering next-generation networks to meet the future needs of TDD spectrum operators in China and other parts of the world, as well as demonstrating its expertise in delivering cost-effective mobile broadband services over LTE to any operator in FDD or TDD mode.
Through its LTE trials and engagements with various operators in 2009, Motorola has achieved a leading position in TD-LTE. Motorola is the first company in the industry to achieve peak throughput rates for TD-LTE in both laboratory and field environments. Furthermore, it has also demonstrated a number of key functionalities across TD-LTE networks, including mobility and multi-user equipment (MU) testing.
Motorola continues to advance its plans for the LTE ecosystem and is collaborating with other leading industry players to accelerate the commercialization of TD-LTE. Previously, Motorola announced the successful completion of its over-the-air trial with carriers as part of its planned collaborative trials for 2009. It is also committed to conducting TD-LTE trials with other top-tier global carriers, beginning in the current quarter of 2009.
Motorola is further building its LTE expertise by showcasing its capabilities during the world's first live mobile demonstration of TD-LTE at the ITU Telecom in Geneva. This demonstration follows previous live mobile LTE trials in Barcelona, Las Vegas, and Sweden earlier this year. Motorola has been selected by KDDI as a key supplier to assist in the development and deployment of KDDI's nationwide LTE network. Motorola is also engaged in LTE trials with other carriers in North America, Europe, and Asia, and operates a test lab in Swindon, UK.
Motorola's LTE solution comprises its OFDM band platform and a range of radio options, including MIMO and smart antennas. The SON network management solution is also included. The Motorola WBR 500 LTE eNodeB series offers flexible deployment options with rack-mounted radios, radio headends, and high-rise radios to support a wide variety of LTE deployments across numerous spectrum bands and meet the needs of a global market.
