The agreement, which makes Telefónica a strategic IT provider for SEAT, is part of SEAT's strategy to position itself as a leading company in connected and digitalized mobility solutions.
In this regard, the agreement between the companies reflects collaboration in three main areas: the shared use of insights (information extracted from anonymized and aggregated data) to design optimized mobility solutions; the application of 5G connectivity in connected cars; and the development of digital transformation projects within the car manufacturing process.
“With this agreement, SEAT consolidates its position as a leader in the digitalization of the sector. Having Telefónica as a strategic partner allows us to take a major step forward in our commitment to offering mobility solutions that make life easier for drivers in our vehicles,” said Luca de Meo, President of SEAT, who added that “this collaboration will also allow us to develop, through technology, projects that boost our production processes and relationships with suppliers.”
Telefónica, as a leader in digital transformation in the automotive sector, is committed to collaborating with SEAT to develop LTE-based business solutions for Industry 4.0 environments. Thus, Luis Miguel Gilpérez, President of Telefónica Spain, points out that “without a doubt, new technologies will bring about a true revolution in the automotive sector, and at Telefónica we want to be the key partner that helps Seat lead this new era. How Big Data and Blockchain will influence the sector, or how crucial 5G will be for the future of the autonomous and connected car, are some of the innovations that Telefónica and Seat will drive together.”
One of the highlights of the agreement emphasizes the implementation of new technologies for 5G networks in the connected and autonomous car ecosystem. Telefónica's fifth-generation network deployment will offer a qualitative leap in the capacity, quality, latency, and speed of telecommunications, enabling the creation of new experiences and use cases for the connected vehicle. Within this framework, both companies will work on various innovation sessions and ideation workshops to propose and evaluate applications of this technology in the automotive industry. The proposals identified as having significant value will be tested through pilot programs. In real-world scenarios, the collaboration will focus on specific areas where Telefónica has deployed these new capabilities.
Furthermore, the partnership also includes the development and implementation of Industry 4.0 initiatives in the vehicle manufacturing process. In this regard, Telefónica and SEAT are collaborating on a proof of concept based on Blockchain technology to improve the traceability of parts within the supply chain at the Martorell factory. Additionally, IoT (Internet of Things) solutions and systems will be implemented to improve and streamline supplier management and relationships.
The agreement also proposes the implementation of joint tools and mechanisms to facilitate data collection, management, and analysis—always respecting the principles of privacy, confidentiality, and transparency for data owners. Moreover, both companies will work together to explore the benefits of Big Data and data sharing in the design of new mobility solutions. To this end, optimized mobility solutions will be developed for cities and urban areas, implementing smarter management of traffic, parking, and other related services.
