This vEPC network will cover eleven Latin American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Panama and Uruguay; and two in Europe: Germany and Spain.
The evolution of the network must keep pace with traffic growth, and Telefónica is meeting this challenge by leveraging virtualization technologies to gain flexibility. These technologies allow adaptation to the changing environment while optimizing and improving efficiency. Huawei's vEPC solution, called CloudEPC, enables the construction of agile networks that quickly adapt to the demands of new services, reduce production costs, support faster service deployment, and dynamically allocate virtual resources while offering availability, security, and reliability, and allowing integration with Telefónica's legacy networks. As a result, the deployment of vEPC supports diverse use cases, including traditional customer-centric services, IoT/M2M, MVNOs, private LTE networks, and mobile-edge computing. Huawei's vEPC maintains the same features as its existing physical version, SingleEPC, thus inheriting the experience and advantages of its leadership in communications technologies.
Telefónica and Huawei have been working together to test the performance of Huawei CloudEPC at Telefónica's NFV Reference Lab in Madrid. During testing, Huawei CloudEPC demonstrated top performance in both the data and signaling planes thanks to its architecture that leverages Enhanced Platform Awareness (EPA) technologies. This achievement was a joint effort between the two companies within the Reference Lab framework. Telefónica and Huawei are currently testing the integration of the CloudEPC solution into Telefónica's UNICA Infrastructure platform, which will enable the complete automation of vEPC deployments and lifecycle management within the company's networks.
