Finland is one of Europe's leading countries in broadband adoption, and demand for high-speed internet and broadband access continues to grow steadily, with over 50% of Finnish households having access to a 100 Mbps fixed broadband connection*. Furthermore, with interconnected Internet of Things (IoT) devices making residential homes increasingly "smart," customers are looking for new services that can support the array of sensors, plugs, and other connected devices they use in their homes.

The field trial of Nokia's XGS-PON technology demonstrates Elisa's commitment to continuously developing the capabilities and speed of its network.

"The use of the new XGS-PON technology means high-speed, high-quality fixed broadband connections. Faster and better connections are needed for new television and video services, and increasingly higher-quality video technologies, such as 4K. In addition, the growing number of devices in homes using the internet connection requires greater bandwidth.".

Federico Guillén, president of Nokia's Fixed Networks business group, states: "With the growing demand for more capacity, next-generation fiber technologies like XGS-PON are being increasingly adopted as operators like Elisa seek to offer enhanced services to customers. Through deployments and more than 40 trials of next-generation technology worldwide, we were able to bring our expertise to Elisa and demonstrate how our XGS-PON solution could help them develop their network in line with demand.".

Overview of the technology used in the trial:
