In 2008, megapixel network security cameras gained traction in the market. Despite more efficient compression standards, the additional information produced by using high-resolution images was significant compared to standard-resolution images. With this increase in data, the demand for products with greater storage capacity grew.

"The trend toward higher resolution security cameras will continue to impact the storage market in the short and medium term," says Sam Grinter, market analyst and author of the report. "In 2015, IMS Research forecasts that megapixel security cameras will account for more than 70% of network security cameras sold.".

In 2010, the use of Storage Area Networks (SANs) over IP and fiber channels began to impact the video surveillance storage industry. Recording video surveillance data is very write-intensive. SANs offer the benefit of using combined virtualized storage, which has the advantage of higher performance than file storage systems often based on Direct Attached Storage (DAS) or Network Attached Storage (NAS) features.

Looking ahead, IMS Research predicts that cloud-based video surveillance storage, or video surveillance as a service (VSaaS), will be the next big trend, gaining acceptance as a viable option for storing video surveillance data. Sam Grinter continues, "Cloud-based video surveillance storage is likely to see the biggest push for enterprise solutions, providing centralized offsite storage of critical surveillance footage. Companies in the video surveillance storage market will need to carefully consider the latest trends in cloud-based storage solutions in order not to miss out in this highly competitive market."
