LTE-Advanced is an evolution of LTE. It was initially specified as part of version 10 of the 3GPP specification. Currently, new technologies are being introduced in LTE-Advanced to achieve peak data transmission speeds of up to 1 Gbps downlink and 500 Mbps uplink. To achieve these peak speeds, LTE-Advanced supports a maximum bandwidth of 100 MHz by aggregating up to five component carriers, each up to 20 MHz wide.

“As a leader and recognized provider of world-class LTE solutions, Agilent plays a critical role in the development, review, and deployment of the new 4G LTE technology: LTE-Advanced,” said Guy Séné, vice president and general manager of Agilent’s Microwave and Communications division. “Our market-leading commercial LTE-Advanced signal generation and analysis tools complement Agilent’s already broad range of LTE solutions and reaffirm our commitment to maintaining a strong and active leadership role in the evolution from LTE to 4G.”

The new Signal Studio and Agilent 89600B Vector Signal Analysis Software for LTE-Advanced enable the generation and analysis of FDD and TDD signals compliant with 3GPP Release 10. With these solutions, design engineers can initiate physical layer testing of LTE-Advanced devices with greater information and confidence, gaining more detailed insights into the root causes of design issues.

Key features of the new 89600B VSA and Signal Studio software include:
FDD and TDD compliant with 3GPP Release 10 for uplink and downlink signal configurations.
• Carrier aggregation in contiguous and non-contiguous component carrier configurations for up to 100 MHz I/Q bandwidth using Agilent MXG vector signal generators and bandwidth analysis up to 140 MHz with the Agilent PXA signal analyzer.
• Independent configuration parameters for each component carrier, including any specific LTE-Advanced bandwidth or modulation type.
• Simultaneous analysis of up to five component carriers, a feature unique to the 89600B, and troubleshooting of each component carrier using a wide selection of measurements, including error vector magnitude (EVM), complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF), etc. •

Enhanced single-carrier frequency-division multiple access (SC-FDMA) for uplink clusters and simultaneous control and data channel (PUCCH and PUSCH) support.

One of the challenges in designing and testing carrier aggregation is that non-contiguous distributions require multiple transmit and receive chains on user equipment and eNBs. For single-band non-contiguous distributions, the PXA's 140 MHz analysis bandwidth, combined with the simultaneous multi-carrier component analysis available on the 89600B, provides engineers with more information by allowing them to simultaneously test multiple transmit or receive chains.

Availability:
Agilent's Signal Studio LTE-Advanced signal creation software is now available for FDD LTE 3GPP (N7624B) and TDD LTE 3GPP (N7625B). Agilent's Express Access Program enrollment in the Agilent 89600B LTE-Advanced VSA is required to access the Agilent 89600B VSA option.
