The Digital Annealer provides users with access to powerful combinatorial optimization problem-solving capabilities for challenges that are difficult for conventional hardware. Toyota Systems and Fujitsu previously used the technology in 2020 in a project to optimize supply chain operations and the logistics network essential to supporting automotive production. This latest project represents the first use case in Japan where Fujitsu's Digital Annealer technology has been applied to streamline automotive production operations.

The new system enables high-speed, efficient solution finding using constraint processing technology to express complex business constraints as equations and inequalities. This patented technology, available since the third generation of the Digital Annealer, was developed by Fujitsu Research based on its extensive experience in the manufacturing industry.
The new vehicle production instruction system will allow Toyota Motor Corporation to respond quickly to production fluctuations and reduce the workload of its employees.
Toyota Systems and Fujitsu plan to expand the system to other Toyota Motor Corporation plants in Japan and, eventually, to Toyota Motor Corporation plants overseas. Starting in
October 2022, Fujitsu will commercially launch its "Fujitsu Computing as a Service (CaaS)" portfolio in Japan, offering advanced computing technologies such as the Digital Annealer and software technologies to mainstream business users, lowering the barrier to entry for high-performance computing resources and technologies such as AI. Fujitsu plans to roll out the service globally in markets outside of Japan starting in fiscal year 2023.
