Other European research projects related to 5G will also be present at this global mobile technology fair. Researchers from 5G-MoNArch, whose technical director is Professor Albert Banchs of the Telematics Engineering Department at UC3M and Deputy Director of IMDEA Networks, will present a multimedia presentation on the potential of this technology. In the final phase of this project, they plan to conduct two demonstrations of 5G networks on two prototypes: one in the port of Hamburg (Germany), for real-time and reliable maritime traffic control; and another in Turin (Italy), at the Palazzo Madama, focused on distributing interactive content capable of handling sudden surges in traffic. To achieve this, they have already defined a 5G network architecture to efficiently utilize network slicing techniques, allowing different operators to provide various services (mobile telephony, augmented reality, sensor networks, live 4K video, autonomous driving) over the same infrastructure.
In addition, another European project in which the University participates, 5G Norma, will also be present at MWC 2018. “We try to orchestrate different technologies in the most efficient way possible, so that the greatest number of services can be run on the same platform without variations in one of them (for example, high video traffic load) affecting the performance of another (for example, the distribution of information between vehicles),” explains Pablo Serrano, from the Telematics Engineering department at UC3M.
These are five of the ten 5G-related projects that UC3M is participating in under the European Horizon 2020 program. The other five projects are: FIWIN5G, FLEX5Gware, 5G Exchange, 5GINFIRE, and 5RANGE. In fact, UC3M and IMDEA Networks are pioneers in 5G research in Spain through their participation in the first 5G laboratory of excellence, 5TONIC, established in 2015.
