The number of companies opting for this type of internet connection also increased during the same period by almost 70%, rising from 7,655 registered lines in 2010 to 25,340 in 2011. According to Esther Gómez, General Manager of Fibernet: “The CMT data is encouraging and reflects how more and more Spaniards are demanding cutting-edge technology that offers them greater benefits such as speed and security.”

Fiber optics seems to be gaining ground over other internet connections for several reasons, among which its main advantages for both end users and businesses stand out:

- High-quality audio and video transmission and real-time data: it will become the preferred transport medium for the networks of the future. In fact, the vast majority of operators are investing in fiber optic infrastructure to prepare for bandwidth needs and requirements.
- Maximum security: It is the most secure medium for data transport. With fiber optics, it is more difficult to extract information, that is, to "tap" it. To do so, one would have to create a bend in the cable such that some of the light (which is ultimately what carries the data) escapes through the cladding that covers the fiber's core.
Fiber optic cables are also smaller and lighter than traditional copper cables.
Furthermore, fiber optics offer greater versatility as they can be applied in different areas:

- Operator backbone networks: these are their main communication arteries through which large amounts of bandwidth are transported.
- Transoceanic communications: via submarine cable laying. These systems compete with satellite communications.
- Local connections: for cable television transmission, among other services.
- Military applications in hazardous environments.
- Industrial automation applications.
- Sensor technology applications. The physical characteristics of fiber optics make it ideal for use in certain environments to detect potential adverse phenomena such as wing twisting in aircraft, bridges, ships, etc.
Esther Gómez, General Manager of Fibernet, concludes: “The use of fiber optics has been, and continues to be, a significant achievement and technological advancement, a small revolution in the world of telecommunications that already offers great benefits to both home internet users and the business market.”
