To conduct this study, Sigfox analyzed all devices connected to its network, which covers 75% of the country and holds a 40% national market share, to determine which regions and sectors are leading the way in IoT adoption. In total, more than 4,200,000 devices were analyzed.

Besides Madrid (19.26%), Catalonia (15.08%), and the Balearic Islands (12.01%), the Valencian Community (10.69%) and Andalusia (9.51%) stand out in the ranking of the highest number of connected devices. In other words, according to these data, the top three regions account for almost half of all IoT-connected devices in Spain. Conversely, Extremadura, Cantabria, and La Rioja have the lowest IoT device penetration rates, with none exceeding 1% of the total.

Regarding the sectors with the most mature IoT adoption, agriculture (27.21%), utilities (25.77%), and facility management (20.63%) stand out. Continuing down the ranking, other areas of activity notable for their high proportion of connected devices are automotive (13.22%) and retail (8.52%). “As the data reflects, there are different speeds in the adoption and use of IoT in our country,” highlights Rebecca Crowe, managing director of Sigfox in Spain. “European recovery plans have focused on the need to advance the digitalization of territories and improve our connectivity and capabilities through technology.”.

“In this context,” Crowe emphasizes, “the efforts being made by some of the communities most affected by depopulation and the ‘Empty Spain’ phenomenon stand out, such as Castile and León, which accounts for almost 5% of connected devices in Spain, mainly in the agricultural sector, but not exclusively. For example, in the province of León, the greatest use is in the utilities sector.”.
