The projects to define IPMQMT (Integrated Polarization Multiplexed Quadrature Modulated Transmitters) for 100G urban applications and an update to the Multi-Link Gearbox protocol were initiated at the meeting. Following the main meeting, the 65 attendees participated in a live, interactive educational workshop offered by OIF and Huawei experts on OIF projects and Huawei's current and future needs in electrical/optical network technologies.
A 400G Framework Document
was also developed by the Physical and Link Layer (PLL) and operator working groups. This document will discuss and analyze the trade-off between higher-order modulation formats, high data rates per channel, and various sub-operators to define 400G operating scenarios and boundaries. The framework document will also consider single-carrier versus multi-carrier solutions for long-haul and urban applications.
“Recently, several approaches to achieving 400G data transmission have been proposed with short- and long-haul fiber transmission distances,” commented Nathan Tracy, President of TE Connectivity and of the OIF Technical Committee. “To develop this document, the OIF intends to bring the industry together to discuss the options and where the gaps lie in initial 400G long-haul deployments.”
IPMQMT for Urban Applications
There is a strong need for 100G coherent optical modulator modules for low-cost, higher-density coherent urban applications. This new project will incorporate the use of new and advanced modulator technologies that will enable smaller and more efficient components, which are needed for these urban applications.
Multi-Link Gearbox (MLG) 3.0
The MLG 3.0 project will define a supporting protocol for remote and in-band monitoring and control and defines IEEE 802.3bj RS-FEC compatibility. In some applications, the transport of 10GBASE-R signals over Nx20G links requires definition, including 2x20G and 1x40G links. The MLG 3.0 Project will define in-band coding that preserves the 10GBASE-R lane-to-lane physical ordering and in-lane bit to support both synchronous and asynchronous 10G lines.
