The mode, called "zero traffic, zero watt," detects when the network has low traffic and shuts down key hardware components in certain radio units to save energy costs. Nokia estimates that this solution can reduce the power consumption of radio units by up to eight times. The solution will be more widely implemented in the next generation of Nokia's AirScale RAN portfolio.
The solution leverages Nokia's Habrok radio unit software, as well as Nokia's MantaRay power solution, which optimizes radio access network power consumption using AI and ML. The extreme deep sleep mode goes beyond previous deep sleep solutions by disconnecting additional hardware subsystems. MantaRay is Nokia's portfolio of network management and optimization solutions that harnesses the power of AI/ML to support intelligent, efficient, and cognitive RAN operations.
