The trial version uses Samsung's 5G solutions - including virtualized RAN, one of the smallest 5G access units and multiple indoor and outdoor 5G routers (CPE) - as well as Cisco's Cisco Meraki Z3 WiFi Router and Ultra Gateway Platform, which delivers a virtual 5G packet core on top of Cisco's NFV (Network Function Virtualization) infrastructure that provides greater performance and flexibility.
Taking advantage of the wide bandwidth available at 26 GHz and advanced antenna technologies such as massive MIMO and beamforming, coverage of over 1 km at speeds of 1 Gbps was achieved for a single user under real-world conditions. Measurements under these conditions also show an aggregate downlink gain of 3 Gbps with few users, although the system capacity is significantly higher.
On July 2nd and 3rd, Samsung and Cisco, together with Orange, held a demonstration near the Floresti City Hall to present the test results and showcase some of the most promising 5G-based smart city and entertainment solutions.
Smart city applications
Samsung's Connectivity Node is installed on a streetlight to provide wireless access for temperature and humidity sensors and security cameras. The sensors and cameras connect wirelessly to the node, which then connects to the core network via 5G. The Connectivity Node is a compact, high-capacity, easy-to-install, and cost-effective alternative for locations where wired deployment is impractical or expensive.
Home entertainment apps
Multiple parallel UHD videos and virtual reality (VR) sessions are streamed simultaneously over the same 5G broadband connection. All content is transmitted via the 5G core and 5G radio link. The capacity of the 5G system is crucial for this demonstration, as it not only enables simultaneous UHD streaming to multiple screens within the same home but also provides additional capacity should content consumption increase further.
In another demonstration, two players compete against each other in a live cloud-based video game over the 5G network. The network's extremely low latency allows for split-second execution of actions and uninterrupted gameplay.
Real-time security camera analysis
The deployed Cisco Meraki MV21 cameras provide video coverage and advanced video-based analytics. Three use cases were showcased for smart cities, in addition to B2B vertical markets such as retail. Video data can be used to provide an accurate count of people moving within the camera's field of view, offering valuable insights for product replacement in retail environments, as well as for better space organization and more efficient service.
