Infinera's ATN network connects with the existing Infinera DTN network that has SDN and extends Infinera's benefits of flexibility, ease of use, and integrated network management across the entire expanded network.

SDN was awarded a $20 million grant by the Department of Commerce's Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) in December 2009. It has supplemented the grant with $5 million for construction. When completed, the Connect South Dakota project will add 140 miles of backbone and 219 miles of backbone to SDN's existing 1,850-mile fiber optic network. The network expansion is expected to deliver services of 10 or more Megabits per second to more than 300 institutional customers in rural and underserved areas of the state, including schools, libraries, hospitals, government facilities, and public safety offices. SDN is one of the first recipients of the Broadband Stimulus grant in the U.S. to deploy and carry traffic on a funded network.

The Infinera Management Suite is designed to provide seamless integration of SDN ATN and DTN networks, with end-to-end service provisioning and visibility. By eliminating back-to-back transponders at network interconnection points, an ATN/DTN network delivers capital expenditure savings while extending Infinera's operational capabilities to the metropolitan network. ATN supports all metropolitan transport services, including Ethernet, SAN, SONET/SDH, OTN, and video services.

Powered by Infinera's integrated photonic circuits, Infinera's DTN is a digital ROADM with the efficiency of integration, as well as network-level benefits including Infinera's broadband virtualization and GMPLS intelligence to the SDN network's supply and management circuits, which has achieved significant benefits from the existing Infinera DTN network, including space savings, reduced energy consumption, and the scalability of being able to add capacity to the network with just a mouse click.

“Infinera has enabled us to operate a powerful, scalable, and highly reliable optical network that is quick to upgrade and easy to manage,” said SDN CEO Mark Shlanta. “Infinera’s ATN was the natural choice to extend those benefits to the edge of our network.”.

“We are very pleased to support SDN broadband stimulus projects with an Infinera ATN network,” said Infinera CEO Tom Fallon. “Infinera’s operational and cost advantages make it an excellent choice for broadband networks in the U.S. and around the world.”.

Infinera's family of optical solutions includes the Infinera DTN, the first optical system based on large-scale integrated photonic circuits, and the Infinera ATN, a compact metropolitan networking platform that extends the benefits of Digital Optical Networks to metropolitan networks.
