The president of the ETSI SET group, Denis Praca, states that "We are very pleased to release new versions of several UICC version 17 specifications that can benefit so many users. This is a major step forward for end users, who will be able to easily use multiple services, and for service providers, who will be able to deploy their applications on a single mobile device, with the advantage of the long-term, recognized security that UICC provides.".
This should also eliminate the need for smartphones to contain more than one physical SIM to accommodate two different accounts on the same device. ETSI technologies, referenced in the GSMA eSIM specifications, have eradicated the need for a physical SIM, allowing users and device manufacturers to efficiently and securely manage multiple accounts.
The ETSI Secure Element Technologies Committee (TC SET, formerly known as TC SCP) develops and maintains Secure Element (SE) specifications, such as UICC or SSP, and their interfaces to the outside world for use in telecommunications systems, including the Internet of Things (IoT), and other industrial sectors.
“The next step for us at ETSI is to get mobile network operators and secure application providers to come forward and work with us to create applications that will run on the platform developed by ETSI,” Mr. Praca continued.
