The Stäubli CombiTac modular connection system is the expert choice when it comes to modular connection systems that not only combine all the necessary data, signal, air and fluid and power connections into a single connector system, but also meet the necessary quality requirements to ensure the ultimate business objectives for optimal efficiency and productivity, as well as long-term cost savings.

There is no room for error in automated factory environments where human intervention, if any, is kept to a minimum, and where the slightest mistake can lead to serious problems later in the production process. As part of this “everything must work” environment, the connectors between machines, equipment, and control units must meet exacting technical and quality specifications without compromise. The shift to intelligent, self-regulating machines and equipment results in an increasing number of signal and data touchpoints, and the multiple individual connectors for power, control, and communication previously used have now been replaced by a single modular connector with strict dimensional specifications.
Fig.2 CombiTac-modular-connector-wThere are numerous cases where the requirements are so stringent that the chances of finding a suitable connector system are reduced to just a few modular connection solutions that fully meet the technical and dimensional specifications. One such solution is a product from Stäubli Electrical Connectors called CombiTac.

The CombiTac modular connection system allows customers to combine power, signal, data, coaxial, fiber optic, pneumatic, and hydraulic connections in a single frame or housing. It is used in demanding applications requiring a long-life connection solution that will perform exceptionally well throughout its intended lifecycle, even when exposed to harsh mechanical and environmental conditions.
The use of specially formed Multilam contact technology in CombiTac contacts is the primary contributor to their long lifecycle capabilities, which exceed 100,000 mating cycles. The patented Multilam technology offers advantages such as minimal voltage drop, minimal contact resistance, and very high resistance to vibration, shock, and impact. Other CombiTac features that ensure a long service life include protective walls and shielding designed to protect the smaller signal contacts, and a unique floating mounting feature for alignment compensation during the connection process.
Several small electrical signal contacts are available, which can be grouped into high-density contact carriers. Dedicated Last Mate First Break modules can be added for monitoring purposes, providing the control unit with information on whether the CombiTac is fully connected.
Regarding power, CombiTac offers a range of options for current levels up to 300 A, as well as high-voltage modules up to 5 kV.
Industrial Ethernet is supported by various connector types, depending on application requirements, including a 10 Gbit module that meets CAT6A standards.
Additional connections are available for audio and video transmission (coaxial), fiber optics, thermocouples, and various pneumatic and fluid couplings up to 15 bar.

The success of CombiTac is based not only on the excellent technical capabilities and modularity of the connector itself, but also on the expertise of Stäubli Electrical Connectors as a solutions provider, working closely with its customers to design fully customized CombiTac solutions.
Specially trained sales engineers work directly with customers and engineers worldwide to create 100% customized CombiTac connectors and provide the necessary support throughout the entire design process, including the supply of 3D CAD models and physical samples.
Types of customization vary depending on the application and include sizing to the customer's exact dimensions or positioning specifications, the use of special resistant carrier materials, the integration of customer-specific parts into the CombiTac solution (special housings, handles, etc.), and the supply of a complete solution from a single source, including cable assembly.
CombiTac modular connectors are becoming a vital part of automated factory environments, providing the constant and reliable connection needed between machinery and equipment for error-free, real-time communication and power transmission, and unbeatable component quality that ensures maintenance costs and downtime are kept to an absolute minimum.
