"We are delighted to have amicably concluded a long-term patent licensing agreement with Apple. The agreement reflects the strength of Nokia's patent portfolio, its decades of R&D investments, and its contributions to cellular standards and other technologies.". Nokia expects to recognize revenue related to this new patent licensing agreement beginning in January 2024. The agreement is consistent with the assumptions Nokia disclosed in its commentary on the long-term outlook for Nokia Technologies in its Financial Report for the first quarter published on April 20, 2023.
Nokia's patent portfolio is based on over €140 billion invested in R&D since 2000 and comprises some 20,000 patent families, including more than 5,500 patent families declared essential for 5G. Nokia contributes its inventions to open standards in exchange for the right to license them on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms. Companies can license and use these technologies without having to make substantial investments in the standards themselves, driving innovation and the development of new products and services for consumers.
