• WaveLogic 3 makes networks smarter than ever before, with software-programmable technology that allows network operators to constantly monitor optical transmission performance and respond quickly to network demand. WaveLogic 3 helps optimize existing optical networks for a wide range of applications (including low latency) across the Pacific, from submarine to ultra-long-range and metropolitan areas, with speeds from 100 Gbps to 400 Gbps.

• Ciena’s new coherent optics processors help service providers extract more capacity from existing fiber optic cables. This facilitates the transport of increasingly bandwidth-intensive applications and improves network economics. WaveLogic 3 can transport multiple 100G payloads in metropolitan and regional environments, multiplying the capacity of existing networks to 100G. With its processing via sophisticated transmitters, it can also increase capacity by up to 30% in new flexible network environments, providing customers with an efficient way to migrate to Terabit networks.
• Network operators can quickly activate services as needs change, or even pre-deploy equipment with WaveLogic 3, to achieve optimized performance across varying latencies, capacities, and ranges with minimal network disruption. This flexibility allows service providers to stand out to customers, accelerate their return on investment, and reduce transport costs.

The capacity and reach of Ciena's WaveLogic 3, to be deployed in the second half of 2012, are such that a single chipset could simultaneously carry live Skype video chats from every home in San Francisco to Tokyo.

Specific design enhancements in WaveLogic 3 include:

• The industry's first transmission DSP: Ciena has integrated digital signal processing into the transmitter (Tx DSP) to deliver unprecedented service flexibility with sophisticated programmable modulation. This includes the industry's first 16QAM, which is essential for delivering speeds exceeding 100 Gbps, and allows operators to adjust network configurations to adapt to changes in reach and capacity demand. Spectral control reduces network costs by improving system margins in metropolitan environments, and pre-compensation allows service providers to run higher-capacity services on existing fiber links, maximizing their network investment.

• Soft FEC: Ciena’s new intelligent Soft FEC algorithm significantly increases the maximum service range and, in practice, enables the deployment of higher-capacity systems (>100G). WaveLogic 3’s Soft FEC is software-programmable, allowing operators to fine-tune latency and range to suit application needs.

• Next-generation DSP receiver: Ciena has completely redesigned the DSP receiver, achieving 75 trillion operations per second (6 times the processing power of WaveLogic 2). An advanced 32nm CMOS process is used to provide the highest possible level of integration with lower power consumption. Further improvements in PMD compensation boost the performance of existing networks with suboptimal fiber conditions, enabling customers to extract more capacity from their existing infrastructure instead of incurring the costs and difficulties of deploying new fiber.
