This is one of the first railway infrastructures with a commercial 5G network, covering not only the station but also the tunnel connecting the four stops. Furthermore, the installation will be maintained after this initial pilot as a global testing ground. This will allow for the development of improvements in railway logistics by optimizing railway management. It will also enable the creation of new applications to enhance customer service and safety, such as the implementation of real-time information systems, personalized multimedia entertainment, and increased remote assistance capabilities for passengers. The goal is to eventually extend this 5G infrastructure across the entire FGC network.

5G coverage will be available at the FGC stations of Plaza España, Magòria-La Campana, Ildefons Cerdà and Europa Fira, with coverage on the platforms and halls of the departure and arrival stations and also throughout the route between the Europa Fira station and the Fira 2 venue.

In the medium term, the connected section will serve as a 5G rail laboratory with two objectives. Firstly, to explore industrial, mobility, and rail logistics solutions, as well as solutions for managing and controlling passenger and freight movements. Secondly, to seek out and test disruptive solutions that directly impact FGC users and help improve their functional experience. These user experience enhancement tests will extend to the Plaça Espanya – Sants shopping complex and the Gran Via 2 shopping center.
