The initiative, led by Nokia, aims to accelerate the adoption of software-defined access networks (SD-ADNs) by contributing open-source software, uniting vendors and operators to ensure everyone supports industry specifications to meet operators' needs globally. The
 
project is based on developing a software reference implementation for an open platform that would eliminate reliance on vendor-specific equipment and proprietary software features by providing standardized interfaces and decoupling the implementation from the underlying hardware.
 
Nokia is the first vendor partner to contribute open source to the BAA project. Fully aligned with BBF's standard data models, the open source code offers common management functionality, facilitating the operation of multi-vendor and multi-technology access networks and allowing operators and vendors to focus on developing innovative new cloud capabilities.
 
The project was created within BBF, a non-profit industry organization focused on designing smarter and faster broadband networks under the Open Broadband (OB) program. It leverages BBF's extensive experience in defining network architectures that meet a wide range of operational requirements and needs. Developing both the specifications and reference codes under a single organizational umbrella will shorten feedback loops and reduce development effort and testing cycles.
