For smart connectivity, home and campus area networks are evolving from gigabit to 10G as fiber optics replace copper cables. This trend has been dubbed "Fiber-in, Copper-out." Additionally, in industrial communications networks in sectors such as electric power and transportation, Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) is evolving toward Fine-Grain Optical Transport Networking (fgOTN) at an increasing rate, a trend known as "fgOTN-in, SDH-out." For smart sensing, in scenarios such as oil and gas pipeline inspection and perimeter inspection, manual on-site operations will be replaced by remote operations. This will require converged sensing, such as vision and fiber sensing, a trend known as "Optical-sensing-in, Hard-workout.".
Focusing on the "3 In 3 Out" trend, Huawei is dedicated to developing innovative products and solutions. The newly launched F5G-A series solutions can be applied in various scenarios, including homes, campuses, industrial communication networks, and perimeter inspection.
1. Fiber-in, Copper-out:
In the home market, Huawei has launched a fully optical target network for ISPs in the era of "fiber to the room" (FTTR). For access, Huawei is utilizing comprehensive home broadband solutions, such as FTTR and Trouble-Free Optical Network Terminals, to help ISPs improve user experience and reduce operating costs.
In backbone and metropolitan area networks, Huawei's industry-leading 400G Optical Transport Network (OTN) products and innovative OptiX Alps-WDM solution enable ISPs to easily handle increased network traffic.
In the campus environment, as campus networks adopt Wi-Fi 7 technology, traditional copper lines will inevitably be replaced by fiber optic cables, which offer higher bandwidth, a longer lifespan (future-proof for approximately 30 years), and are more environmentally friendly.
Huawei, which targets large campuses in sectors such as education, healthcare, and manufacturing, has launched its Fiber to the Office (FTTO) 2.0 solution, designed to upgrade bandwidth, network infrastructure, and operations and maintenance (O&M) across active networks.
Huawei has achieved a groundbreaking breakthrough with the industry's first XGS-PON Pro technology, a passive optical network standard that supports ultra-high-bandwidth access for 12.5G or 25G services, delivering 2.5 times the industry standard bandwidth.
The solution, one of the first of its kind in the industry, supports end-to-end (E2E) slicing, enabling up to eight dedicated networks (such as office and production networks) to operate on a single infrastructure. This eliminates siloed network architectures and reduces the total cost of ownership (TCO) by 30%.
In addition, the Network Cloud Engine (NCE) management platform implements holistic management of IP LAN and passive optical networks, enabling a single view to manage an entire campus network through a unified platform, improving O&M efficiency by 50%.
2. fgOTN-in, SDH-out
Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) has been widely used in industrial communication networks as a secure and reliable solution for the past 30 years. But as digital intelligence continues to increase in industry, the bandwidth limit imposed by SDH has become a bottleneck, creating the need for a next-generation production communication network that supports higher bandwidth without sacrificing security and reliability.
SDH networks in the electric power and transportation industries are being upgraded and rebuilt with Fine-Grained OTN (fgOTN).
This follows the International Telecommunication Union-Telecommunications Standardization Sector (ITU-T) officially approving the fgOTN standard in 2023 and defining it as a next-generation technology to replace SDH.
Huawei has launched the industry's first fgOTN-compatible solution with the OptiXtrans E6600, a highly reliable product offering five nines availability and ten times the bandwidth of SDH. It supports services such as PCM, PDH, SDH, and Ethernet, and maintains SDH O&M practices, ensuring a smoother evolution.
3. Optical Sensing In, Hard Work Out:
Critical infrastructure, such as railways, airports, and oil and gas pipelines, often requires perimeter inspection as part of manual on-site operations. The efficiency of such inspections is typically low, and working conditions are often poor.
Now, intelligent perimeter inspection and monitoring solutions can be deployed across large areas, such as pipelines, thanks to next-generation fiber optic sensing and AI analytics.
These accurate, always-on solutions allow companies to redeploy personnel from field sites to offices, improving productivity and working conditions.
Another advantage of Huawei's Optical Visual Link (OVLS) solution is its use of fiber optic vibration and video detection to achieve zero false negatives. With a leading optical DSP module and a basic AI model, the OVLS solution provides 10 times the accuracy of the industry standard and offers high anti-interference capabilities. Even in winds of level 7 and heavy rain, high accuracy can be guaranteed.
