The agreement comes as operators are increasing their spending on mobile and fixed networks to improve coverage and boost capacity to keep up with the surge in video and smartphone data traffic.

TE Connectivity, which spun off from Tyco International Ltd in 2007, reported that the unit generated revenues of approximately $1.9 billion in the year ending September 26. The business manufactures fiber optic cables and network switches.

The acquisition does not include the operation of the underwater fiber optic unit, which is used by telecommunications, oil and gas customers.
