The talk, given by Radhakrishnan Nagarajan, a research fellow at Infinera and a member of the PIC development team, described the structure and performance of a 1 Tb/s PIC receiver. The receiver receives and decodes ten 100 Gb/s channels, using QPSK modulation and coherent detection. The receiver integrates more than 150 optical systems onto a single monolithic indium phosphide chip.
Terabits and Superchannels:
With internet traffic growing exponentially, driven by video, cloud computing, and mobility, PIC technology will be essential to support network capacity growth and accommodate this traffic while reducing the cost per bit and power consumption. This will enable service providers to transport traffic while maintaining profitable business models. Photonic integration allows for greater network reliability because the connections between optical components are printed directly onto a chip. From a network architecture perspective, 1-terabit PICs could enable the use of "superchannels," or groups of data channels linked together to allow for more efficient use of network resources and the optical spectrum. At the consumer level, 1 Tb/s PICs could allow the download of a high-definition movie in one-fifth of a second, or support the transmission of two million simultaneous video conferences—all from a single pair of chips.
In 2004, Infinera began shipping optical systems based on 100 Gb/s PICs. In less than two years, Infinera's systems became the leading market player in the North American long-distance optical networking market, according to data from the independent analyst group Dell'Oro Group. Last week, in collaboration with pan-European service provider Interoute, Infinera announced the results of the latest field trial of its next-generation enterprise PICs, which deliver 500Gb/s capacity on a single chip pair. Optical systems based on the 500Gb/s PICs are expected to be commercially available next year. The 1Tb/s PIC represents another leap forward in the evolution of photonic integration.
