The acquisition immediately expands Molex's active optical connectivity product portfolio, incorporating QSFP active optical cables. The acquisition includes an exclusive contract with Luxtera for the development and supply of advanced chipsets for future Molex products, based on Luxtera's silicon photonics technology. These include next-generation 14 Gbps products, as well as quad-channel and 25 Gbps products, for the InfiniBand and 100 Gbps Ethernet markets. The companies will collaborate to design future products with the goal of providing customers with cutting-edge interconnection solutions at speeds of 10, 14, and 25 Gbps and higher.
According to Doug Busch, vice president and general manager of Molex's international fiber optic products group, this is a strategic acquisition that will allow Molex to greatly increase its share of the global fiber optic systems market.
“The acquisition of Luxtera’s AOC business immediately adds 40Gbps QSFP+ products to our existing portfolio and strengthens our tradition of innovation for the benefit of our customers, enabling them to deliver high-performance products,” says Doug Busch. He continues, “We are excited to collaborate with Luxtera on the future development of AOC because our expertise in interconnected systems, combined with Luxtera’s optical solutions, which are distinguished by their long range, low power consumption, and low binary error rate, will enable us to offer maximum levels of photonic integration and performance.”.
Greg Young, CEO of Luxtera, believes the new cooperation is perfectly aligned with the long-term strategic goals of both companies.
“This contract is a milestone that validates the growing commercial importance of silicon photonics technology,” says Greg Young, adding, “Luxtera will continue to accelerate its growth by focusing on the silicon photonics technology platform and, at the same time, contribute to expanding our technology among customers in the global market. The collaboration with Molex will allow us to bring the advantages of silicon photonics to customers worldwide.”.
