Authority received $20 million in broadband stimulus funding from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) in the first round of stimulus payments. Authority operates a network in upstate New York, providing broadband connectivity to rural areas, small towns, and the main U.S. Army base, Fort Drum. The stimulus funding will help Authority expand its existing network with new routes to better serve existing customers and offer broadband connectivity to new customers in upstate New York, including the Adirondack Mountains region. When completed, Authority's open access telecommunications network will consist of more than 1,250 miles of fiber.
Following a competitive bidding process and extensive evaluation, Authority selected an Infinera digital optical network (DTN) due to its speed, flexibility, and scalability. Authority will also benefit from the rapid deployment of services and the cost-effective operation of an Infinera network based on digital features, including one-click provisioning and digital ROADM capabilities. Broadband virtualization enables the delivery of broadband and services between any two points on the network, as well as the delivery of end-to-end digital OTN services. With an Infinera DTN, Authority can offer a wide range of broadband services quickly and cost-effectively.
“We are excited about the new services and economic development opportunities we will be able to offer in the region,” said David Wolf, CEO of Authority Telecommunications. “We will deliver a wide range of services quickly, including high-speed broadband to local businesses and institutions, help attract new industries, and offer advanced services such as telemedicine and distance learning on our network.”.
“We are pleased to support Authority in bringing world-class broadband services to upstate New York to help the region compete more effectively in today’s economy,” said Infinera CEO Tom Fallon. “Infinera’s digital optical network architecture supports broadband stimulus networks with a long-term network solution that is simple, fast, and flexible.”.
Infinera's family of optical solutions includes the Infinera DTN, the first optical networking system based on large-scale integrated photonic circuits, and the Infinera ATN, a compact metropolitan platform that extends the benefits of digital optical networks beyond the city core.
