“Catalonia and Spain are leading a generous rollout of very high-speed broadband. We must try to ensure that this process is not halted due to interpretations of free competition,” explains Joan Francesc Fondevila, director of the Center for Cable Studies (CECABLE) and professor at various universities.
The annual meeting on Catalan telecommunications will analyze the evolution of the broadband network (cable, xDSL, HFC, FTTx, satellite, electrical grid or microwave) and the content and services that can fit into triple play, quadruple play or quintuple play.

The first session, on May 5th, will analyze “Broadband in Catalonia and Spain,” and will feature presentations from Wifidom, Adamo, Fibracat, Ericsson, Adobe, Telefónica, Voz Telecom, NeoSky, and BT. In the afternoon, the “Services and Content in Broadband Networks” session will include the roundtable discussion “The Keys to Success of Historical Catalan and Spanish Cable,” with presentations from CECABLE, Alpha Enginyeria de Telecomunicacions, Acotec, Airenetworks, La Cala de Fibra, and the Mequinenza City Council. “The phenomenon of traditional cable is an example of coexistence between the large operators resulting from the most recent legislation and the romantic yet effective experiences of the networks that provided television service to numerous municipalities,” states Fondevila. Following the roundtable discussion, presentations will be given by Memory Merits, Eurona Telecom, Guifi.net, and Ilimit.
The second session, on May 6, will examine the “Evolution of Cable Types and Installation for Broadband” with contributions from Huawei, Keyfibre, Corning, Xarxa Oberta de Catalunya, Anvimur Telecomunicaciones, Cable Runner, Technetix, Datwyler Cabling Solutions, and Meru Networks. In the afternoon, the session “New Horizons for the IT Sector” will feature presentations from Watchguard, Bitdefender, Microsoft, UNIT4, and Panda Security.
The third session, on May 7th, entitled “Diverse Impacts of Broadband Networks,” will begin with the traditional institutional roundtable, this time on “New Employment Opportunities Thanks to Broadband?”, featuring representatives from CECABLE, the Government of Catalonia, Localret, Feceminte, Telecos.cat, COETTC, and Xarxa Oberta de Catalunya. Following this, Telvent-Schneider Electric, Sony, Anxanet, and Abertis Telecom will speak.
