Nokia has supported Telefónica's 5G development strategy since 2018 as part of the "Technological Cities" project in the historic city of Segovia. This project tested 5G capabilities through a range of use cases in urban areas to help local residents and businesses understand the benefits of new 5G-based digital services. Specifically, the project examined the advantages of faster data speeds, greater capacity, and lower latency.
Nokia is currently supplying its flexible portfolio of AirScale Radio Access products for 4G and 5G NR (New Radio), which offers ultra-fast data speeds, connectivity, and ultra-low latency, providing Telefónica with the flexibility needed to meet growing demand. Nokia is also contributing its expertise in deployment and support services. Furthermore, Nokia is supporting Telefónica in developing its network for the hyper-connected 5G era in various areas, including IP networks, optical transport, and fiber, among others.
Joaquín Mata, CTIO of Telefónica Spain, said: “We are delighted to be working with Nokia on our nationwide 5G rollout in urban and rural areas of Spain. We anticipate that 5G will have a game-changing impact on both the consumer and business segments, and Nokia’s state-of-the-art 5G equipment will help us deliver the best possible experience for our customers.”.
Tommi Uitto, President of Nokia's Mobile Networks division, stated: "We look forward to extending our long-standing partnership with Telefónica into the 5G era and introducing a range of exciting new services in Spain. We will help Telefónica execute its strategy and deliver compelling and transformative experiences, leveraging Nokia's 5G solutions for businesses and consumers.".
