Nokia Siemens Networks' M2M software suite for GSM networks helps prevent network overload from traffic, avoiding network congestion and supporting M2M reliability and growth.

M2M refers to technologies that use a device to capture an event, which is then transmitted over a network to an application that translates it into meaningful and useful information. For example, the device could be a smart energy meter transferring energy consumption patterns and trends to an energy provider. This would allow providers to offer automated billing while adjusting supply to meet demand. Other applications include fleet management, tracking valuables, and personal health monitoring.

The M2M software suite for GSM relies on a precise location function—an invention of Nokia Siemens Networks—that effectively reduces the amount of signaling information between mobile M2M stations and transceiver base stations. As a result, GSM operators with enterprise M2M services do not require new base station sites to accommodate more M2M users.

As part of its M2M suite, Nokia Siemens Networks also offers class-based prioritization based on Quality of Service (QoS), giving priority to urgent M2M operations, such as health and safety information. In addition, operators can better manage less critical loads during peak hours, which contributes to network robustness. The suite also features intelligent resource adaptation (SRA).
