The radio spectrum is the medium through which electromagnetic waves propagate, enabling wireless communication. Since this medium is a limited resource, it must be shared by all wireless radio frequency communications, requiring all services that use it to coexist harmoniously.
Gamma Solutions has been awarded the project, competing directly with other major companies such as Rohde & Schwarz and Eurocontrol, among others. “The services we will offer are geared towards ensuring the proper use of the spectrum, that is, to guarantee that it is being used by the appropriate parties, under the appropriate conditions, and that this allows for the coexistence of all services,” explains Óscar Santos, Director of the Telecommunications Area at Gamma Solutions.
The work the company will perform will be made possible by monitoring and analyzing the spectrum using specialized measuring equipment that allows for the differentiation of various radio signals propagating through the air. Gamma Solutions will invest approximately €2 million in this service over the next two years.
“Our responsibilities are more focused on ensuring that the quality of the various services sharing the radio spectrum is not degraded by its misuse,” explains Santos, adding, “Spectrum use is highly regulated through various restrictions, and when a service violates these restrictions, it causes interference that directly affects the other services.”.
The importance of proper management of the radio spectrum is evident in the volume of business generated by the services associated with it: some €23 billion annually (approximately 2% of national GDP), mainly coming from the mobile communications and audiovisual sectors.
The Madrid-based company will dedicate 11 direct jobs to qualified engineers in this field. Since part of the operation requires fieldwork, Gamma Solutions will equip the project with 10 4x4 vehicles equipped with integrated mobile control and measurement units capable of monitoring and analyzing the various services in real time and in accordance with the specifications of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
The project will be led by the General Directorate of Telecommunications, and Gamma Solutions is expected to carry out activities in the provinces of Lleida, Cuenca, Cantabria, Alicante, Castellón, Teruel, Huelva, Badajoz, Navarra, Girona, Tarragona and Palencia.
