The ARBR system will be developed and owned by Seabras Group (a subsidiary of Seabras) and Werthein. Seabras is the sole owner of the entire Seabras-1 submarine cable system between New York (USA) and São Paulo (Brazil), developed, commissioned, and owned by Seaborn Networks, along with funds managed and/or advised by Partners Group, the international private markets investment manager with US$57 billion in assets under management. Seabras has sold its capacity on Seabras-1 to a wide variety of large and small telecommunications companies, as well as other customers, through irrevocable rights of use (IRUs) or short-term leases. Just as Seaborn operates Seabras-1, it will also operate the ARBR system. The combined ARBR and Seabras-1 cables represent a total project size of over US$575 million.
“We are delighted to announce our agreement with Grupo Werthein to build and commission the ARBR system,” said Larry Schwartz, president and CEO of Seaborn Networks and Seabras Group. “This project is a response to the Argentine market’s need for significantly greater international capacity dedicated to a next-generation system, while also providing the country’s first independent operator model for a vital submarine cable route.”
Argentine Communications Minister Oscar Aguad explained: “Argentina needs a comprehensive modernization of its communications infrastructure, and this first independent submarine cable system represents a very important step toward that goal. We are on the path to economic transformation in the country. This major project is a result of the new rules of the game we are promoting, which, through the provision of predictability and legal certainty, create the necessary conditions for companies to invest on a large scale in new projects within the country.”
“Considering that the last submarine cable between Argentina and Brazil was built sixteen years ago, and given that this is the main route dedicated to data and voice communications between Argentina and the rest of the world, this new independent route was long overdue,” commented Darío Werthein of Grupo Werthein.
The new ARBR system will land in Brazil at the existing Seabras-1 cable landing station in Praia Grande, facilitating progressive direct connectivity to New York via Seabras-1. The landing station in Argentina for the ARBR is expected to be located in or near Las Toninas. The ARBR system will be a four-fiber pair system with a maximum initial design capacity of 48 Tbps, and its completion is scheduled for the second half of 2018.
