OTEGLOBE, a leading international telecommunications operator in Southeast Europe and a member of the OTE Group, has recently signed an agreement to acquire a new international submarine cable system, called AAE-1, at its international mooring station in Chania, Crete, with the aim of transforming Greece into a major European Internet gateway to the Middle East and North African regions and beyond.
To achieve this goal, OTEGLOBE is extending its European backbone network with Infinera's DTN-X platform. This extension will allow OTEGLOBE to deploy international services for its onshore and submarine network, differentiate service offerings, and simultaneously increase network efficiency while scaling OTEGLOBE network capacity.
“Our goal is to become an alternative hub in the Mediterranean for the continued growth of transit traffic from Europe to Asia,” commented Mr. Andreou, CEO of OTEGLOBE. “To manage this increased demand, we implemented Infinera’s solution, which allows us to improve the scalability of our backbone with a single solution from the Mediterranean to the European core.”.
“We are pleased to continue upgrading OTEGLOBE’s network,” said Chris Champion, senior vice president, EMEA at Infinera. “With Infinera’s intelligent transport network, OTEGLOBE has doubled its network capacity and provided its customers with increased optical layer capacity. This is a direct result of deploying Infinera’s FlexROADM superchannel technology.”
With Infinera's DTN-X platform, OTEGLOBE can now deliver 100 Gb/s coherent throughput across 500 Gb/s superchannels, with a scalable design to support terabit superchannels in the future. These high-capacity superchannels are enabled by 500 Gb/s photonic integrated circuits (PICs), developed and manufactured by Infinera, the only vendor to date providing 500 Gb/s throughput from a single network card. The PICs allow the DTN-X platform to integrate dense, wavelength-division multiplexed superchannel transmission with up to 12 Tb/s of non-blocking optical transport network switching, providing easy scalability as traffic demands increase over time. The DTN-X powers Infinera's Flexible Network System (FlexILS™), which delivers higher spectral efficiency than ever before, provides a unique architecture that integrates OTEGLOBE's submarine and terrestrial routes, and provides scalability and flexibility by allowing OTEGLOBE to quickly activate additional capacity to meet customer requirements based on FlexROADM superchannel technology with free switching at the optical layer.
