Red Hat Open Innovation Labs worked in conjunction with the FIWARE Foundation and Human Oriented Products (HOPU), a FIWARE community member solutions provider, to create an enhanced, open-source, easy-to-deploy, fully scalable, and robust Smart City solution powered by FIWARE, running on Red Hat OpenShift.

Together, the FIWARE Foundation, HOPU, and Red Hat have developed a more scalable smart city solution that any city in the world can use to become smarter and more sustainable. By processing data collected through HOPU's air quality sensors, the FIWARE-powered smart city platform can extract the information needed to make smarter decisions for the well-being of citizens. Two Spanish cities, Las Rozas and Cartagena, piloted this project. The Smart City platform and the demo air quality monitoring application were implemented in both. Red Hat OpenShift provides the flexibility needed to deploy the smart city platform and the base application on any private or public cloud, improving their scalability and robustness.

Throughout the residency with the Red Hat Open Innovation Labs team, Red Hat's expert consultants helped engineers from the FIWARE Foundation and HOPU acquire the skills and adopt the open tools and practices necessary to standardize an end-to-end hosting-agnostic deployment process and establish a demonstration environment for the solution. With the goal of improving engineer productivity, the residency also focused on helping the team establish a better foundation for collaboration and chart technological and cultural changes to align with its mission.

Following the Red Hat Open Innovation Labs residency, the FIWARE community can now expand the smart city platform to various use cases for cities worldwide. This platform can be used to measure traffic, water samples, noise, and pollution. By improving the deployability and scalability of FIWARE platform technologies, cities can accelerate innovation and transform their communities. Currently adopted by over 350 cities globally, FIWARE will be able to expand into new markets and enhance the adoption of open-source standards.
