Accompanied by Albert Febrer, Head of Production at the Communications Division, he showcased the 1,000 m² cleanroom with controlled conditions and continuous monitoring of temperature, humidity, and particles, in accordance with aerospace industry standards. This cleanroom is divided into:
• 750 m² of ISO-8 (or Class 100,000) cleanroom for automated manufacturing, assembly benches for integrating equipment and subsystems, and equipment for functional and environmental testing.
• 250 m² of ISO-7 (or Class 10,000) cleanroom for the production of hybrid microwave circuits.
The cleanrooms are equipped with all the necessary resources to manufacture and validate electronic equipment for satellites according to the standards of the European Space Agency and NASA, as well as those of the main satellite manufacturers in Europe and the USA, and incorporate the most advanced production and testing equipment currently available. Around 40 production staff are currently working on projects for the ESA, such as Meteosat Third Generation, Metop Second Generation, and Biomass, as well as for the commercial market, with equipment for Spainsat Next Generation and the OneSat platform.
In a statement, Diego Rodríguez highlighted the significant investment in high-tech equipment: “An investment exceeding 5 million euros, which adds to the previous investment of 70 million euros with the 2018 acquisition of the TRYO Aerospace & Electronics group. In total, this represents an investment of 75 million euros that consolidates SENER Aerospace's capabilities in communications systems for specific applications, not only related to the institutional or commercial space markets, but also to terrestrial communications (civilian applications in Air Traffic Control – ATC – and Broadcast).”.
SENER Aerospace aims to become one of Europe's leading companies in Space and Science. One of the pillars of its growth is the Telecommunications sector, where it already has a track record of involvement in more than 1,500 satellites and spacecraft. In fact, SENER Aerospace is a world leader in the supply of Telemetry and Telecommand (TTC) antennas and is a regular supplier to major international manufacturers of communications satellites, providing all types of antennas, passive and active radio frequency equipment, including those for the so-called New Space programs. It currently supplies GaN power amplifiers (SSPA) and low-noise amplifiers (LNA) for Airbus' OneSat and Spainsat NG satellites, and its components are present in constellations such as Galileo, Globalstar 2G, O3B, Iridium NEXT, and OneWeb. New contracts are expected in 2021 for programs such as GlobalStar, TeleSat, and SES Next.
In addition to communications equipment, SENER Aerospace is a European leader in precision mechanical systems for satellite platforms and instruments, having participated in major programs of the ESA and NASA space agencies, with a 100% reliability rate. Its technology is present in missions as important as Hubble, Rosetta, SMOS, Pléiades, Herschel and Planck, JUICE, Athena, Solar Orbiter, Proba-3, Gaia, BepiColombo, ExoMars, Curiosity, Euclid, LISA Pathfinder, MTG, FLEX, LOP Gateway and Mars 2020, Earth Explorers, Copernicus, and Galileo. In launch vehicles, it supplies systems for Ariane, Vega, and Verta, and also participates in space transportation vehicles such as ATV, Space Rider, and IXV.
In the area of Science, SENER Aerospace's contributions to Ground-Based Astronomy and Large Scientific Infrastructures (LSIs) stand out. SENER Aerospace has been active in these fields since 2000 and boasts a broad portfolio of projects that attest to the quality of its solutions for clients such as the European Southern Observatory (ESO). SENER Aerospace's work in Astronomy includes optical systems, electromechanical components and systems, instrumentation systems, and large mirror drive systems for both ground-based telescopes and space-based systems. The list of custom precision mechanisms delivered to date by SENER Aerospace includes the positioning systems for the M2 mirrors of the GTC, VISTA (ESO's telescope), and IRAIT telescopes; the actuation system for the JPCam panoramic camera; the robotic calibration arm for ALMA; a rotator for ESO's VLT telescope; the translation and optical corrector (PFC) systems for the primary focus of the William Herschel Telescope; the preliminary design of the EST's M1 primary mirror; and the design and production of the Segment Manipulator (SeM) system for the M1 primary mirror of ESO's Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), which will be the largest optical/infrared telescope ever built. SENER Aerospace has also supplied the M2-M3 and M5 mirror cells for the ELT. In this regard, the new facilities include an Astronomy workshop with an electromechanical systems integration area capable of mechanically assembling equipment for large scientific installations.
