The solution involves placing a temperature probe inside the refrigerators. If the temperature exceeds the optimal thresholds for vaccine refrigeration, the probe sends an alert via Sigfox's 0G network to those responsible for maintenance, using the Systam IoT software platform. This platform also includes additional features such as geolocation of primary care centers (CAPs), inventory generation, temperature report generation, power outage alarms, and open door detection, among many others. These features will help CAPs fully optimize their management in a centralized manner without requiring additional resources.

Following a pilot project at a primary care center, the Catalan Health Institute (ICS) is adopting the solution designed by Sigfox and Systam to implement a comprehensive monitoring system for all COVID-19 vaccine refrigerators in the remaining primary care centers of the Lleida health region (approximately 100 refrigerators in total). The goal is to ensure rapid deployment and guarantee the cold chain for vaccine and medication storage. The aim is also to expand coverage to all of Catalonia.
The developed solution guarantees continuous coverage and data transmission thanks to Sigfox's global 0G network, specifically designed for IoT applications. Because it is based on radio technology, it does not require Wi-Fi, an internet connection, or mobile SIM cards, facilitating deployment and reducing connectivity costs. Sensors located in the refrigerators send the necessary information for real-time monitoring and historical data analysis, including the status of each refrigerator and its geographical location within each building. The system also allows for notifications to be sent to nursing staff if needed.
In the words of Rebecca Crowe, managing director of Sigfox in Spain, “we are pleased to have been able to collaborate with the ICS and Systam to bring to fruition a solution that contributes
