The ETSI ISG MAT was officially launched with an inaugural meeting held on January 15 and 16, 2025, in London, with 24 participants from industry, academia, and government. During this meeting, the group elected its leadership, with Dr. David Vargas of the BBC as chair, and Prof. Bruno Clerckx of Imperial College London and Dr. Stephen Wang of VIAVI Solutions as vice-chairs.
Dr. David Vargas, the newly elected president of ISG MAT, stated: “Multiple access techniques are at the heart of mobile technology development and are considered a key technology for improving the radio interface of IMT-2030 systems. We are excited about the launch of ISG MAT and bringing together industry and academic members to play a crucial role in accelerating the development of advanced multiple access techniques for 6G mobile systems.”
Scope and areas of activity:
Use cases, implementation scenarios, key performance indicators, and evaluation methodology.
Study of transmitter and receiver processing structures, including complexity aspects.
Study of physical layer procedures.
Study of link-level and system-level performance.
Study of the potential impact of specifications and gaps in new multiple access techniques.
Proof-of-concept testing, prototyping, and field trials.
The new ETSI Group will deliver group reports that will be considered by 3GPP and other relevant industry bodies in their 6G standardization activities. It will contribute to the development of 6G as a widespread and ubiquitous communication system that will connect humans and machines across a wide range of use cases. This initiative aligns with the evolving needs of future wireless networks, which are expected to support, among other things, new immersive interactive experiences and overcome connectivity challenges in high-demand areas. It will also provide more efficient and reliable media delivery (live and on-demand) over large-scale mobile networks.
