What is 5G RedCap and why is it important?
5G RedCap (Reduced Capability), also known as NR-Light, is a simplified and optimized version of the 5G NR (New Radio) technology defined by the 3GPP Release 17 standard, designed for devices that require lower data rates and longer battery life. While full-featured 5G can introduce excessive complexity and cost for mid-range sensors, wearables, or industrial equipment, and 4G can no longer meet some modern IoT demands, 5G RedCap offers a balanced solution.
5G RedCap is the ideal middle ground between traditional LTE and high-end 5G. It offers many of the advantages of traditional 5G, such as low latency, high reliability, and multi-device support, but optimized and less complex: fewer antennas, less bandwidth required, a simpler modem design, and lower power consumption. The result is more affordable, compact devices with longer battery life. Its introduction democratizes access to 5G connectivity across a wide range of business applications.
SparkLAN

has integrated this technology into its AC5035 line, which includes three variants: the AC5035 and AC5035_NA in LGA form factor, and the AC5035M2 in M.2 3042 form factor. All use the Qualcomm SDX35 modem, offer 5G NR connectivity in sub-6 GHz bands, and support multimode LTE. The NA version is optimized for North America and features 5G SA and LTE Cat4 compatibility, while the global versions are geared toward international deployments. Regarding radio, the modules support 2x2 MIMO downlink (for improved performance and robustness) and offer eSIM as an option for remote subscription management.
From a physical standpoint, LGA connectors are more compact (approximately 28 × 25–31 × 2.2 mm) and designed for soldering onto circuit boards, while the AC5035M2 (30 × 42 × 1.67 mm) allows for interchangeable M.2 connections. All operate within a broad temperature range of −30 °C to +75 °C, making them suitable for industrial and outdoor applications. The choice between them depends primarily on the operating region, the need for replacement/service (M.2), and space constraints in the design.

Applications:
These modules are ideal for scenarios where gigabit download speeds aren't required, but reliable, durable, and efficient connectivity is:
• Industrial sensors and automation: remote monitoring, predictive maintenance, and machine control.
• Smart cities and urban management: connected street lighting, surveillance cameras, and weather stations.
• Precision agriculture: environmental sensors, smart irrigation systems, and lightweight drones.
• Professional wearables and compact medical devices: health monitors, wearable devices, and lightweight trackers.
• Logistics and asset tracking: tracking fleets, containers, mobile equipment, and supply flows.
The major advantage is that 5G (or hybrid 4G/5G) connectivity can be deployed without the added cost or energy consumption of a full 5G module. SparkLAN's RedCap 5G modules represent a strategic step toward the adoption of optimized 5G networks, enabling the IoT universe to extend beyond LTE. They combine efficiency, scalability, and simplicity, facilitating the development of next-generation connected solutions.
