“These devices have an integrated Geiger sensor that allows measuring the level of incidence of radioactive particles (alpha, beta, gamma) and giving the number of pulses per minute, which can easily be converted to the level of energy absorbed by a body (Sieverts),” says David Gascón, R&D Director of Libelium.The values obtained are sent wirelessly using ZigBee and GPRS technology to the control center, where a global view of the control network can be obtained.
The use of these devices will allow, for the first time, the creation of preventative radiation monitoring networks, as they can be placed on lampposts and trees along the roads that connect nuclear power plants with neighboring towns and cities, thus allowing the real-time detection of any possible leak.
