Both Validator PRO models offer Ethernet speed certification and include an optical power meter; however, the ValidatorPRO-NT adds PoE and 802.11 b/g/n testing capabilities. The Validator PRO/PRO-NT is a comprehensive and cost-effective solution for ensuring the performance of copper, fiber, and wireless LAN installations.
Developed by JDSU, the ValidatorPRO aims to provide a low-cost solution to the increasing complexity of modern networks, which must support voice, data, and video not only over copper networks but also over fiber and wireless LANs. The Validator series will allow installation companies to achieve significant savings in testing and measurement, as technicians can perform complete copper cabling analyses, verify fiber networks in the network core, analyze Wi-Fi networks for mobile users, and ensure that PoE power to terminals is functioning correctly, all with a single tool.
To certify Ethernet cabling performance, the ValidatorPRO performs a bit error rate (BER) test, verifies maximum cabling performance, measures signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), skew measurements, and continuity tests to detect open connections, short circuits, miswires, high-resistance links, broken cables, and high-resistance failures. It also provides precise distance-to-fault and total distance measurements. Regarding power measurements, the ValidatorPRO includes a comprehensive optical power meter at wavelengths of 850/1300/1310/1490/1550nm on single-mode and multi-mode fibers to accommodate most current networks with optical links.
This new version includes a significant set of functionalities for active network measurements: PoE (Power over Ethernet) measurements to ensure adequate power on the correct pins; and port discovery to guarantee proper speeds and available duplex capability. It connects to Gigabit Ethernet and performs ping tests to verify layer 3 connectivity of hosts; it can discover devices on the network using the CDP “Cisco Discovery Protocol” or LLDP “Link Discovery Protocol”; it discovers and displays essential information regarding the operation and configuration of 802.11 b/g/n networks.
Finally, the ValidatorPRO software includes a powerful "Plan-Um" software tool to perform true planning engineering and generate reports with the network architecture, organize cabling information, estimate cable length requirements, and document the results obtained.
