The range includes an SMT SCC050 connector with friction contacts and sealed switching technology to achieve 500,000 cycles at a price point typically associated with 100,000-cycle products!

The new range suits a wide variety of applications, including point of sale (POS), pay TV, set-top boxes, transportation, and identification. These applications have very different price and technical requirements. For example, a retail point of sale requires excellent reliability and a high number of cycles, while a set-top box design, where the card is inserted and removed infrequently, prioritizes low cost and fewer card insertion cycles.

GCT's ranges offer a variety of options to suit different application requirements, including through-hole or surface-mount termination, friction contacts, and landed options with or without shielding.

Choosing the correct contact type is an important consideration, as friction and landed contacts have different characteristics, both in cost and number of card insertions.

Landed contacts are movable contacts fixed within the connector. They move to engage with the card's rear insertion pads. The card surface is not scratched, allowing the connectors to achieve a higher number of cycles, typically 500,000.

Friction contacts are fixed within the connector. When the card is inserted, the data contacts are wiped until they reach the card's pads. Depending on the card surface, traces of the wipe movement may appear after a few insertion cycles; this does not affect the card's function. Friction contacts are a more economical option and offer a relatively low number of cycles, up to 100,000.

Card detection is achieved by either a blade or a sealing switch. The contacts of a switch are sealed within a plastic housing and not exposed to the outside world, whereas the contacts of a knife switch are contained within the plastic of the connector housing and are exposed to the outside world. The sealed switch construction is inherently more reliable than that of a knife switch; generally, sealed connectors offer 500,000 cycles, while knife switch connectors offer 100,000 cycles. Both open and closed switch types are typically available.
