Thanks to an innovative manufacturing concept using modular tooling applied to the insulation structure, ERNI is able to supply versions with 12 to 140 pins and heights of 1.0 mm or 2.0 mm for male connectors and 4.0 mm, 6.0 mm, and 8.0 mm for female connectors just six weeks after receiving an order. The advanced tooling design minimizes the previously time-consuming planning and production of injection molds. This allows ERNI to respond flexibly and quickly to customer demands, as well as reduce logistical costs.
MicroCon connectors are designed for parallel (board-to-board and mezzanine), orthogonal (90-degree), and coplanar connections to the printed circuit board. Versions with varying heights for the female and male connectors enable different board spacings of 5 to 10 mm (up to 20 mm later) for mezzanine applications. For longer distances, IDC flat cable connections for AWG 34 wire are available.
The MicroCon dual-row series with a 0.8mm pitch is ideal for a wide variety of demanding applications in the industrial, medical, lighting, automotive, and consumer electronics markets. It complements the 1.27mm pitch dual-row SMD family and the 0.8mm pitch hermaphrodite MicroStac family. Despite its compact design, it remains as robust and reliable as ever. Even the basic version features a reinforced outer face. In addition to coding, a 'blind connection' guide with an extended clamping range helps ensure a secure connection.
In the MicroCon family, ERNI Electronics has retained two fundamental design features in the miniaturized 0.8mm pitch. One exclusive feature for connectors of this size is the use of double-sided spring contacts for a secure connection and high reliability. ERNI has successfully developed this patented spring contact over the years and adapted it to smaller steps.
Therefore, despite their miniaturized design, MicroCon connectors offer high junction tolerance with permissible misalignment tolerances on the longitudinal and transverse axes of +/- 0.7 mm. The tolerance for angular tilt is
+/- 4 degrees.
While many manufacturers join the male connectors on the raw, stamped printed side, which minimizes circuit capacity and the number of connection cycles, ERNI also stamps the contacts but rotates the contact cap
90 degrees. This allows junction on the smooth surface and ensures reliable contact as well as high current capacity.
Automatic assembly:
MicroCon connectors are designed for automatic SMT assembly. For this purpose, in addition to the SMT connection, the female connector features a robust plastic housing that can also withstand the high temperatures of lead-free reflow soldering. Furthermore, MicroCon connectors are suitable for double-sided reflow soldering. The connectors are supplied on tapes and reels for easy automated assembly. These robust connectors are specified for > 500 connection cycles and can handle a contact current of up to 2.3 A at 20°C. The solder terminal is tin-plated.
